Local plants for local gardens

Come in for a wander around our nursery. We sell over 150 different local species, all grown from locally collected seed and cuttings and available in a range of pot sizes.

From grasses and groundcovers to shrubs and trees, you’ll find our plants are all labelled and organised into categories to help you find exactly what you’re after.

Indigenous plants are ideally suited to local conditions and offer a great low-maintenance option for your garden. They will also improve biodiversity, providing food, habitat, shade and shelter to an array of insects, birds, frogs and local fauna.

There is an astonishing variety of local plants of different shapes, sizes, forms, colours, textures and fragrances to provide endless options for your garden. In the nursery we have seasonal displays, presenting a range of plants to demonstrate the plethora of options that indigenous plants can offer. Download our growing list to see our full range.

Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are available to assist and advise on what to plant where. We also stock a range of other products, including tree stakes and guards, organic compost, mulch and soil conditioners to give your plants the best possible start.

Hi Nick, Henry, Kane and all the other people that work at Otways Indigenous Nursery. I’m in awe of your commitment to Indigenous Native Gardening and the support you have given an amateur gardener like me. I have planted over a thousand native plants that I’ve purchased from you at my property in Charles St, Lorne. You have supported and guided me over the last 8 years to become an accomplished indigenous native gardener. I believe I have one of nicest bush gardens in Lorne thanks to you & me.

Local plants for horticulture professionals

We grow and supply a large range of indigenous plants for local horticultural professionals. Planting indigenous plants in local parks and gardens provides a wide range of benefits.

Not only do plants look great and in keeping with the local environs, they also require lower maintenance and less watering, improve local biodiversity and help to provide important habitat and vegetation corridors for local fauna.

From locally collected seed and cuttings we propagate, grow and sell a large range of local species. From grasses and groundcovers to lilies and other wildflowers, shrubs and trees, we offer a variety of pot sizes, including a range of advanced local trees grown in air-pruned rocket pots. We propagate and can supply plants year-round, and pride ourselves on our friendly, professional and prompt service.

We are also able to offer expert advice on plant selection for your project. Business owner Nick Day brings many years of experience in horticulture, landscape design and construction to his role in the nursery, and we are very well placed to support our customers with advice on how indigenous plants can play a role in any project.

Did you know that many non-indigenous species often specified on landscape projects have a suitable local indigenous alternative? If you’d like further information feel free to contact us via our enquiry form and we’d be happy to assist you on your next project.

Otways Indigenous Nursery has been our main source of local plants of provenance in the Aireys Inlet/Fairhaven area for Sea Echo Landscapes for decades.

Nick and his crew are genuinely committed to educating their customers of the many environmental and practical benefits and attributes of using our local plants.

It is very rare in the Nursery industry these days for the public to be able to walk into a nursery where the people selling to you are the ones who actually propagated and grew all the plants on display, this of course has the added benefit that they can then tell you exactly where the seed was collected, what conditions the parent plants were growing in etc.

For the above reasons we feel extremely lucky to have this nursery as part of our community.

Ecological Restoration

Local plants for restoration, conservation and revegetation projects

We work with local landowners, managers and authorities to collect seed and cuttings and propagate indigenous plants for ecological restoration and conservation revegetation projects.

These projects are typically larger scale with longer timelines to allow the sourcing of propagation material and contract growing as required.

We’d love to help you with your next project, so get in touch if you’d like more information or download our growing list of over 150 different species in a range of pot sizes. You can also find examples of some ecological restoration projects we’ve supplied in our gallery.

Some of our clients include private landholders, Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority, Parks Victoria, various Landcare groups, local schools, Department of Environment Energy and Climate Change, Surf Coast Shire, Painkalac Project /  Wilding The Valley and Corangamite Catchment Management Authority.

I have purchased plants from Otways Indigenous Nursry of varying sizes, from tube stock for revegetation, through to established trees. It’s great to know that all seed is collected from provenance, which ensures genetic health of the population and ultimately leads to healthier plants, as they are adapted to the location conditions, soil and rainfall. The staff are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They assisted in species selection for our restoration project, and while I was there, I purchased some local indigenous edibles for my own garden, a win for the environment and my garden.

Pop in for a wander around our nursery and hear why we believe indigenous plants, in almost any situation, are a great option, or get in touch via our enquiry form.

Living on a regenerating bush block I don’t want to introduce plants that could become weeds or cross-pollinate with species in the national park. I know Otway Indigenous Nursery plants are locally sourced, healthy, hardy and beautiful. Staff are so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, not only about plants, but about wider environmental issues. It’s a joy to visit this beautiful nursery and see how our local plants can be used to landscape a garden, attract wildlife and support ecosystems. I’m a big fan.
